VOICES OF MAIZ: Event held in Ek Balam, Mexico – December 2016
The ‘Voces el maíz’ (Voices of Corn) international forum took place in Ek Balam community, Yucatán, México (1-3 December 2016). The meeting sought to strengthen ties between traditional corn growers, community leaders and organisers of corn diversity programmes across the world.
The event was attended by community leaders from across the world whose countries play a key role in the traditional cultivation of corn. The forum sought to bring people together and create alternative spaces where a strategy for conserving corn diversity and protecting its bio-cultural heritage could be meted out.
The principle objects of the forum were to:
- Aid communities by providing a space in which to exchange experiences and learn from one and other.
- Encourage the continuity and revitalisation of the bio-cultural heritage of corn.
- Foster new forms of exchange, cooperation and opportunities for forming alliances.
